Reverse engineering
You likely came to Yoga holding certain images of yourself as possible to attain, through practice. A calmer you. A more self-assured you. A you without pain. A fitter you. A you that could thrive despite your personal obstacles, whose potentials could grow through Yoga. Yoga is not the solution to your problem; however it helps you find the solution. Rest assured, we are not winging it: we're reverse engineering it.
As Yoga Therapists, we set long term goals, only after having assessed, discussed and turned toward the symptoms and possible causes we will be addressing. These goals serve as guide posts for personal transformation. They require us to visualize a reasonable, realistic version of you with relevancy for your needs. We visualize you whole and healed, and want you to, as well.
Each course is reverse engineered: we start with a set goal, and work backwards to determine what steps/practices will lead us there.
Each class is reverse engineered: we set a goal first, and work backwards, crossing Ts and dotting eyes to ensure that by the time you reach it, you're ready.
Each sequence in a practice is reverse engineered: we set a goal first, start where we are, approach it, achieve it, and return to our starting point, sustainably altered.
So, unconsciously, as you take our courses, our classes and do your home practice, you are learning to take a step by step approach to the more balanced version of yourself we both know is possible, through Yoga.
When's the last time you drove to a completely random location for no reason whatsoever? That would be concerning. In life, we have a destination, let's say, in a professional environment at 9am. We then determine what time to leave the house. What time to eat breakfast. What time to dress. What time to practice. What time to shower. What time to wake up. What time we'll need to go to sleep the prior night.
Yoga planning is not that different. What differs is in quality. How do we want to show up. It's not enough to go through the motions. Reflecting on what we need for ourselves, in tandem with a teacher's guidance, matters. We have a map with a proverbial destination circled. Our aim is to focus on the quality of the breath. The function of the asana-s. The essence of the meditative focus. In all practices, breathing, movement and meditation, hanam (goal) is set and we use the upayam (tools) to support your journey there, whole and healed.
